1. History: UT Martin was founded in 1900 as Hall-Moody Institute, a private institution offering both high school and college-level courses. In 1927, the institution became a public college and was renamed the University of Tennessee Junior College. In 1951, it was reestablished as a four-year college and renamed the University of Tennessee Martin Branch. The institution gained its current name, the University of Tennessee at Martin, in 1967.
